How we (probably) broke limits at the #BCAIHackathon

Microsoft recently organized the #BCAIHackathon, a 3-day event focused on creating innovative solutions using generative AI in Dynamics 365 Business Central. One of the areas they focused on was improving the search functionality in Business Central. They implemented a semantic search feature that retrieves data based on meaning rather than exact text. This was achieved by transforming Business Central into a vector database and using vector similarities functions to find relevant results. The team also created a second version of the semantic search app that works at the SQL layer, using features like clustered columnstore indexes for improved performance. The results were impressive, with the search capability going from 10 seconds to milliseconds. The team believes that working at the platform level to support AI features is key for scalability and performance in big data applications.
