Dynamics 365 Business Central: Using Semantic Search from AL
In February 2024, Microsoft hosted the #BCAIHackathon where a native semantic search implementation was launched in Business Central. This prototype demonstrated enhanced search performance using embeddings at the SQL level. Dynamics 365 Business Central now includes embedding-based semantic search as a first-class AL capability, which understands the meaning of queries rather than just keywords. Semantic search uses vector embeddings and language understanding to provide relevant search results based on intent and context. This new feature is implemented through the System.Search."Semantic Search" codeunit and includes methods for setting search targets, maximum results, and performing similarity searches across specified fields. Currently available for OnPrem extensions, plans are in place to expand availability to SaaS. This development is significant as it opens up new possibilities in AI for Business Central, with the hope of cloud availability soon.
